Starting Over

Welp, I done fucked up. It was mostly when I changed my website password and apparently managed to not update the entry in 1Password. Dur. But then there was the minor detail that I hadn’t installed the fucker correctly in the first place and couldn’t complete a password reset. FML. (And no, I hadn’t done any backups, because I’d get around to it at some point, right?  -_-)

Since in order to import a WordPress blog, you need the export XML file (which requires you to be able to log into the damn thing), I just just said fuck it and rebuild everything from scratch. Luckily, my Fever install has a separate database, so I didn’t have to rebuild my RSS feeds, which was really nice.

While it is annoying to lose all that has gone before, I don’t really care all that much and it is nice to be able to wipe the slate clean and start over. Hopefully with less stupid this time…

Bot Sketches

I’ve been noodling with various bot designs in my spare time, for a personal project.
Maintbot 01

Fun, almost cute little guy.

Maintbot 02

Less cute, more of a level boss, methinks. Probably should add guns. Oh, and joints.

What the Macbook USB C Pearl-Clutches Forgot

USB-C is an open standard, so anyone can make USB-C accessories and cables, not just Apple. More than that, Monoprice’s $35 USB-C to HDMI adaptor makes Apple’s USB-C to USB-C, HDMI, and USB-A adaptor look pretty damn reasonable, doesn’t it?

George Lucas whining about Disney’s Star Wars

George Lucas, via Ars:

“The [story ideas] I sold to Disney, they [made] the decision that they didn’t really want to do those, so they made up their own,” Lucas said in an interview with Cinema Blend. “It’s not the ones I originally wrote.”

He says that like its a bad thing.

Dear David Cameron

From The Independent:

David Cameron is a right-wing reactionary neocon in the same mold as Darth Cheny and Bush II, so this isn’t surprising. At all.

The Prime Minister said today that he would stop the use of methods of communication that cannot be read by the security services even if they have a warrant. But that could include popular chat and social apps that encrypt their data, such as WhatsApp.Apple’s iMessage and FaceTime also encrypt their data, and could fall under the ban along with other encrypted chat apps like Telegram.

This next one, probably meant to be rhetorical, actually has a real answer:

“In our country, do we want to allow a means of communication between people which […] we cannot read?”

Yes, we do.

Between this and the noises that US law enforcement have been making over Apple’s and Google’sencryption by default, 2015 should be a very interesting time in the new crypto war.

Update: WhatsApp is bigger than SMS, and iMessage, being huge, might also be.

Go Microsoft!

Seriously, I really hope MS prevails here, the US government has completely gotten out of control. Global jurisdiction? Sure, why not?

Anyway, its beyond time for everyone to just encrypt all the things and for all cloud services to use TNO end-to-end encryption. The government (all of them) has shown it cannot be trusted with the power it claims.

No Thanks Twitter

Buried in a Twitter support page:

To help build a more personal Twitter experience for you, we are collecting and occasionally updating the list of apps installed on your mobile device so we can deliver tailored content that you might be interested in.

The big questions is, how does this get past iOS app review? This is quite possibly the creepiest thing I’ve seen on the platform since, well forever. Luckily there’s an easy fix:

–> Two people have been arrested for leaking ‘The Expendables 3’

From The Verge:

Two men have been arrested in connection with the leak of The Expendables 3 this past July. A DVD-quality version of the entire film found its way onto torrent sites three weeks before The Expendables 3 premiered in US theaters….

We’ve heard that lecture many times now, so here’s the lesson you should take away from this case: steal money from Sylvester Stallone, and they’ll never stop hunting you down.

The obvious question is: When are they going to arrest Stallone for continuing to make Expendables movies?

Me on Gruber on Ive on the  Watch

DF:

“Just yesterday, somebody was saying, ‘Wow, do you know what I just did? I set the alarm in the morning, and it woke just me by tapping my wrist. It didn’t wake my wife or my baby,’” he recounted. “Isn’t that fantastic?”

How exactly is that going to be useful if you need to charge it nightly?

More than that, I seriously doubt a gentle tap on the wrist is ever going to wake me up in the morning. I need my alarm to blast me out of bed and my coffee to slap me in the face.
